CONFUSION OVER TRANSPORT RENEWALS

ANIMALS IN TRANSIT / TRANSPORTER AUTHORISATIONS

When the Welfare of animals in Transit (WAIT) came in

There were two types of authorisation issued

TYPE 1 – OVER 65KM AND UNDER 8 HRS (SHORT JOURNEY)

TYPE 2 – OVER 65 KM AND OVER 8 HRS (LONG JOURNEY)

Both these authorisations covered the BUSINESS to transport animals. You would have filled in the form, and it covered the business for 5 yrs.

These were applied for and filled in before the certificates of competence (your test with us)came on line. The test is to prove the competence of THE PERSON that does the transporting. The test you did lasts for life. You will not need to sit the test again.

As it is 5 years from the issue of authorisations, some are coming up for renewal (as stated in Gwlad )and we have had many calls from farmers when these have arrived, thinking they are asking for a retest- this is NOT the case.

Apparently if you held a TYPE 1 SHORT JOURNEY AUTHORISATION, it is being automatically renewed.

But If you had applied for long journey authorisation 5 yrs ago, (which is fine, lots did to cover themselves in case they went over 8 hrs.) then you may have a renewal through for a type 2, which is a very lengthy form with loads of questions ! As it developed , it became clear that most people only needed the short journey authorisation, and the short journey certificate of competence. It is really only those that travel to the continent require the long authorisation.

If this is the case, and you have a type 2 authorisation, with a type 1 test, You may be better off asking for a SHORT JOURNEY TYPE 1 authorisation if you do not intend travelling over 8 hrs, rather than attempting to renew a type 2 authorisation.
